Minority Journalists Leaving Newspaper Biz in Droves

Last week we learned that the state of diversity in the media industry continues to grow more stark.

For only the second time in more than 20 years, the number of minority journalists leaving the daily newspaper profession outnumbered the number landing their first job.

Sen. Kerry: I Need Your Feedback on Net Neutrality

This may be the only place I don’t feel the need to play up the importance of tomorrow’s Commerce Committee hearing on Net Neutrality.

When I’ve talked to other people – and when I post on other blogs – about this hearing, I always try to grab people’s attention and tell them that, even with the primary tomorrow, we need to keep our eyes on the ball when it comes to Net Neutrality and the future of the Internet.

I know I don’t have to tell all of you at SavetheInternet.com about that.

Public Interest vs. Corporate Lobbying

Today, the Washington Post published a wonderful profile of Free Press' policy director Ben Scott.

I take issue with the insinuation that Free Press somehow isn't truly populist because Google happens to agree with us on Net Neutrality. It's not like they (or any other corporation) are funding our efforts.

But I digress. By far the most interesting tidbit in the piece is the mention of lobbying expenditures. Read more »

More suppresed news you may have missed, 46 stories from Feb. at Joe's Union Review

I got myself 46 stories in 26 days of Feb, quite a few are in the suppressed news catagory. Some articles cover the gamut of ideals seen here at freepress. Most of them go back to the idea that there is a war on the middle class worker here in the US and around the entire globe. Take a look, let me know what you think.

China moves ahead of the U.S.

There seems to be some poetic justice in the fact that this week, Open Internet Week, it was reported that China will become the world leader in Internet connectivity by the end of 2008.

For some time now, as they bombard us with misleading data, government and industry spokespeople have been boasting that the United States is home to the largest number of Internet users. I’ve heard it is also home to the largest number of professional baseball players. But as my grandmother would say (in Yiddish) “So what?” Read more »

Comcast's Closed Internet

The FCC investigation of Comcast's violations of Net Neutrality is in full swing. Thousands of Free Press activists have weighed in, and yesterday Free Press and its allies in the SavetheInternet.com Coalition filed extensive research and legal analysis of what Comcast is doing (if you have been following the issue closely, you should enjoy all 100 pages).

Comcast is now playing defense.

Internet Bill a Blow to the Gatekeepers

Reps. Ed Markey and Chip Pickering today launched the latest salvo in the struggle to keep the Internet free of gatekeepers with the introduction of the House "Internet Freedom Preservation Act of 2008” (HR 5353).

The bipartisan bill protects Net Neutrality under the Communications Act and calls for a nationwide conversation to set policy about the future of the Internet.
