Unsafe Radio

It has been a hidden fact that these days, the radio isn’t as safe as it used to be when they were the prime source of news and entertainment. You might be wondering what I’m talking about. Well, recently there have been some cases brought up in the FCC regarding radio alert systems. In one particular case, Action Radio, a radio licensee situated in the Portland area, was being investigated for their violation of the Emergency Alert System requirements.

Fighting for Better Media in 2008

It is a new year, and we are on the verge of a new fight for our media, for our communities and for our democracy.

Last year, you fought hard in communities across the country, attending hearings, holding meetings, and making a space for the public to shape the media policies that impact your daily lives. You filled town halls and church basements. You gave passionate testimony and told haunting stories about the ways Big Media has turned their back on your communities.

Low Power FM Gets a Big Push

On Tuesday the 27th, low power FM community radio got a big push from the Federal Communications Commission. After years of prominent advocacy from community radio stations under threat of being knocked off the air -- and station hopefuls who were angry that the FCC gave away thousands of potential low power FM radio slots to distant repeater-stations bringing no local content to their communities -- the Commission ruled to make space on the dial for new LPFM stations, and to work with stations to protect them from going dark when big commercial radio encroaches on their signals. Great news!

What Happened Last Night at the FCC

The FCC took some very positive steps in broadcast policy last night but left a very important cable policy unresolved.

Thanks to an unorthodox majority of votes, the Commission endorsed new rules that would protect spots on the FM dial for hundreds -- if not thousands -- of low-power, community radio stations. We applaud the FCC’s recognition of this important public service.

One Step Closer to Better Radio

Thanks to tens of thousands of Free Press activists we are one significant step closer to having hundreds -- if not thousands -- of new Low-Power FM (LPFM) radio stations across the country.

Earlier this week, the Senate Commerce Committee voted to advance the Local Community Radio Act of 2007 (S. 1675). This bill is a first step in reclaiming the public airwaves with more diverse, local and independent radio stations.

Consolidation Devastates Radio Diversity

Wednesday morning I testified before the Senate Commerce Committee on media consolidation's devastating impact on diverse and local radio ownership.

Congress must send a message to the FCC to stop its rush toward more consolidation. Ownership rules exist for a reason: to increase diversity and localism, which in turn produces more diverse speech, more choice for listeners, and more owners who are responsive to their local communities.
