Fast Track or Wrong Track: FCC Must Address Female/Minority Ownership and Localism First.
With America’s media environment more consolidated than ever, fewer
companies own more media properties in markets nationwide. The rules
that govern our media landscape are currently under review at the
Federal Communications Commission (FCC). As recent news stories
revealed, FCC Chairman Kevin Martin is pushing for the Commission to
vote on these rules by the year’s end. It is crucial that before we
vote on these rules, we first address substantial issues long avoided
by the Commission, particularly, the dismal state of female and
minority media ownership and media localism.

Call to Action on Female/Minority Ownership Panel

Last week, the FCC hosted an historic public hearing on media ownership at the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition National Headquarters in Chicago, IL. There is no better place to address the issue of media ownership, particularly for women and minorities, than Chicago. Roughly two-thirds of the people in the city are black and Hispanic, and over half are women. But collectively, they own just six percent of all TV and radio stations in the Chicago media market. It is outrageous that Chicago, with all its diversity, has the lowest proportion of minority radio ownership of the nation’s 22 largest markets.
